Did you know that eating oysters dates back to prehistoric times?
Like many foods, oysters were originally eaten by early man and were even harvested by the Romans, who
developed elaborate cultivation systems. In the early 1800’s oysters were so plentiful that they sold for bargain prices, mainly to the working class. Later, oysters became a delicacy and earned a respectable place at many fine restaurants.
There is an old saying that says you should only eat oysters during the months ending in r.
In reality, this saying held true because of the lack of refrigeration in days long past. Today, we know it’s safe to eat oysters anytime during the year, but true oyster lovers may argue that the best oysters are harvested during the fall.
That may explain why several Northern European cities along the Atlantic coast have oyster festivals in the fall, after the spawning season, to celebrate that year’s bounty. Many of those same cities still celebrate the oyster including Galway, Ireland with the longest running oyster festival in the world! Check out the fun at: http://galwayoysterfest.com/ and enjoy!
